Southern Style Granite, Good Old Southern-Style Bigotry

I’ve got a Facebook friend, a fellow EMT, named Robert J. Wilson.

Robert’s gay, and proud of it. He’s also been in a committed relationship with his partner for at least ten years. I’m cool with that. We spar occasionally on his blog because Robert’s a  godless, atheistic, liberal Democrat type, and I’m a red-blooded, God-fearin’, gun-totin, libertarian, hunnert-percent Murkin type. Naturally, our views are going to differ on many things.

But hey, if political leanings were big enough to stand in the way of friendship, TOTWTYTR and I would never share Mule Breath’s wonderful company, much less his world-class chili and barbecue.

Anyhoo, Robert brings to our attention one Baton Rouge area business, Southern Style Granite. They have a really nasty attitude toward gays, to the point of refusing to do business with them.

And that’s fine, really. If they’re afraid of the gay cooties, that’s their business. The libertarian in me tells me that, as a private business, they have the right to refuse service to anyone.

But they don’t have the right to be immune from the consequences of their intolerance and bigotry.

Um, do they not realize how many interior designers are gay? Jeez, talk about not knowing your clientele!

So do me a favor, and link this post in your own blogs, or link Robert’s post, and let’s Google bomb these backwards-assed yahoos into the 21st century. You did it for me with those mouth-breathers at Cycles and More, and now I’m asking you to do the same with Southern Style Granite. This post or Robert’s needs to be the #1 Google result by the end of the week.

And if you’re of a mind, go to one of the online review sites and spread the word about their business practices.

Thanks for your help.

So much for that tolerance the left is always going on about.

Thanks, Kelly!! I agree with you 100%…on this. Sparring with you is a privilege and keeps life interesting. :) One tiny quibble, though: I never said I wasn’t gun-totin’… LOL!!! :D :D

The Cifreos at Southern Style Granite are DEFINITELY out-of-touch with their clientele, which doesn’t bode well for their business in this economy–ESPECIALLY with the price of marble/granite at an all-time low and their apparent propensity for alienating huge swaths of customers with a statistically-higher proportion of discretionary income and a significantly higher likelihood to remodel their homes…

Also, I meant to remind you that your blood is half blue & half red…or at least that’s what I learned at NEMSA. :D

Put up a post with a link for you. Even if I’m one of those atheists you disagree with, I’m with you on this one.

This post is at fourth right now (1939 EDT / 20100830) on a Google Search of “Southern Style Granite”

For those that care, you are now the SECOND hit for “Cycles and More”. They got their own website back up to #1.

Thanks for the nod. I love you too.

On the one hand: You are awesome.

    but

Yelp will remove “reviews” by people who are just complaining about a business’s practice. That’s why they’re called “reviews”, bud! I’ve seen people complain about all sorts of things, but if your review doesn’t say “I was a customer” it will be at least filtered [where it's hidden and not counted for ratings] if not outright removed. I’ve seen people’s accounts removed from Yelp for putting up non-reviews, too.

There are better ways to spread the word: Facebook, Twitter & Identi.ca, other blogs, telling your friends, screaming loudly…. :-)

    Done.

I’m at 6,000 unique blog hits and still climbing… The word is definitely being spread… Yikes.

I’m gonna hafta comment on this in the morning…after all, we can’t have the vast contingent of gun-toting libertarian gay men going unrepresented and all…..

Took me all day (they frown on blogging at work for some reason), but I just put up another long-winded diatribe in defense of Mr. Wilson, the LGBT community, and true Southern hospitality of the intellectual variety.
Mr. Wilson, I hope we can bring you some measure of justice.
Kelly, ya done good bringing this to our attention.

Thank you for passing this along. You’re right: refusing to do business works both ways.

AD, Google has you at #4 out of 6.5 million.

    I’m here via Old NFO.
In this day and age, it’s a disgrace.
In this economy, it’s just a stupid business practice.
As a human being, it’s mean spirited.
    I’ll pass it along.

Ya know, this is about as concise a summation of this situation as I can imagine. Two thumbs up.

You and Dan Savage posted about this on the same day–but as far as I can tell, your readers are doing a much better job of spreading the word–Counting each blog once, gun and EMS blogs are tied for first, and together make up well over half of all blogs that mention this incident.

I guess everybody here has no skeletons right? maybe some of you got a little collection of kiddy porn? government workers going after private company? just no telling what a little private eye work might turn up. you have sought to destroy a livelyhood with nothing but hearsay not allowed in court of law. but your actions most likely will end up in court good luck with that. now then did southern style have some kind of super gaydar, or was openly gay a disruptive force akin to a 4 year old run amok. disruptive customers are often removed from any manor of establishments with no consideration to lifestyle choices. i have no connection with southern style but have alerted them to your jihad. free speach is free as long as it does no harm witch is not your intention. i hope you are delt with in the strongest fashion for it is your actions that are truly criminal. my only child’s godfather is a gay man and friend of over 45 years.

it later turned out that “The point I made and keep making is that Kevin and Co. were NOT refused service. The owner offered to sell Kevin granite, he didn’t want any.”

So the story here is about people throwing a hissy fit when they don’t have facts.

After further review, the story is one of Ignorance & Bigotry in a gay flame war. Sad.
