Ain’t the Internet Grand?

Not five minutes ago, I just had a chat with a paramedic from Saudi Arabia who seeks to immigrate to the good ol’ USA, and practice his craft over here. He had a million questions about certification, paramedic schools, reciprocity, and so on.

I’m afraid I didn’t leave him with a good impression of the fragmentation of EMS in the United States, but still, how neat is it that two guys from different cultures and countries can communicate so easily, limited by little more than our language barriers and typing skills?

As-Salamu  Alaykum, Khaled. May you find success in your endeavors here in our country.

Very cool! He'll probably have a nightmare of a time trying to get his certification recognized though.

What are the chances that ANYONE from Saudi Arabia can emigrate here nowadays, paramedic or otherwise?

I would assume that he'd have to start over :-/

It's doubtful he'll be able to challenge a state or NREMT certification exam with his paramedic education from Saudi. It may be possible, however, to gain advanced standing in a college paramedic program based on his education and work experience.

Speaking of which; I am doing an advanced paramedic program. We have to do all sorts of rotations during the next year, but we get to spend a week doing anything we feel relevant, anywhere we want. Where do I start if I want to go to the US? I appreciate any helpful tips…

A couple of years ago, I was on my way from Chicago, Illinois to Madison, Wisconsin to pick up a friend from Austin, Texas at a park festival where he was playing guitar. I got lost, so I used my cell phone to call a friend in Helena, Montana who looked up in MapQuest and gave me street-by-street directions to get to the park.

    Those intertubes are great!

    Hey! That's not a Foley!!

Were I talking to a Saudi counterpart I'd be curious to know if the Islamic modesty laws trump the saving of a life. They shouldn't, of course, but sometimes rationality gets defenestrated.
