i admit that i have more questions than answers but i do have an opinion. (imagine that from a medic). EMS was started by the federal govt. as with any federal agency, you see a history of mismanagement and neglect, not to mention changes made to fit the current administration, not only on the fed level but also at the state and local levels. policy makers as a whole do not use the services of EMS. we are seen as a necessary evil with an ever increasing need for funding. add to that these tough economic times and we find ourselves more than ever being shoved to the end of the fiscal line. to the general public we are viewed as people who sleep all day at work and when we do get out, we make alot of noise and create traffic jams. just as doctors are often unfairly blamed for soaring medical costs, we are blamed many times for the indigent and malignering folks that crowd the ER and for whom every Tom Dick and Harriet believe that they personally are paying for those folks medical care and our salary. we mistakenly think of ourselves as heroes and that we should have all the funding our little hearts desire and the ones that disagree just dont get it. my opinion? do your job. take comfort in the little victories and dont forget why you got into this business in the first place. stop expecting a pat on the back for simply doing your job. always strive to better our profession while never losing sight of the task at hand. see yourself for what you are. baby steps.
