The New Ride

As promised, pictures of the new ride:

DSCF0490

2010 Toyota Tacoma 4×4, and with the interest rate I got, I’m only paying about $25 more in monthly notes for 60 months through Toyota Motor Finance than I would be paying for 72 months through my credit union. Even better, only about $100 a month more than I’d have payed for the 2006 Tacoma 4×4 with 91k miles on it.

I can afford the payments, but the truck would have been impossible to purchase without the donations of a number of you good people going towards a down payment. I can’t thank you enough for that.

Of course, toting a new monthly note means less gun acquisitions -*sob!* – but my new ride is downright purty, and she matches the color scheme of my bike. In short, she’s hawt, and she makes me happy in my pants.

In fact, she’s so hawt that I just don’t feel right calling her Frankenhoopty II. She deserves better.

So, I’m offering a challenge to you, my readers. What shall I name the new ride? Leave your suggestions in the comments, along with why that particular name suits me and the new ‘yota.

In a few days, I’ll pick the top five suggestions, and put them up in a blog poll for voting. The person who submits the winning suggestion gets a signed copy of En Route.

So get crackin’!

If it was black, I'd suggest “Elvira” – but silver??
How about “Tonto”? Faithful companion, yadda, yadda, yadda….

I’m tempted to suggest “Mjöllnir”, after Thor’s hammer, “depicted in Norse mythology as one of the most fearsome weapons, capable of leveling mountains” or deer.

I’m not sure I can pronounce “Mjöllnir” though. I don’t think my mouth bends like that.

There are a number of possibilities.

    1. Given that you're in the South, and driving a truck, and are a loquacious commenter on anything and everything (particularly EMS-related), how about Silver Tongued Devil? (Of course, that could relate to the driver as well, so the truck could be the Silver Devil and you could be the Tongued Devil . . . )

    2. Since your daughter's going to be spending a lot of time in it, there's KatyBeth's Chariot. (Goes well with a certain toy she left on the table at the restaurant once!)

    3. Since asepsis is important to you, there's Colloidal Silver. Just think: you put on your eyemask, sit down, strap in, switch on, and shout out the window “Colloidal, Silver! Away!” . . .

    4. Since you work for the Borg, and that name's associated with a well-known automotive parts firm who probably made bits of your new ride, you could call her the Silver Borg Warner, to cover all the bases.

    :-)

    Silver Suppository
    Redneck Limo
(best I can think of at the moment)

I do like KatyBeth's Chariot, or maybe KatyBeth's Limo

Well, since your new ride is hawt, and makes you happy in your pants, how about naming her Anna Nicole(http://ambulancedriverfiles.com/2007/02/stopping-off-for-a-cold-one/)? Oh, and happy riding :)

    Serendipity

That’s one hell of a car. It’s funny to notice the difference between, well, Europe and the US. Our cars a quite a bit smaller, less ‘muscular’, less truck-like. Buying a car with the use some kind of credit union is quite exceptional around here: most people here first save, then buy.

It seems a bit off that you first state you’re, well, too poor to buy a new car and then buy a car nonetheless – and a huge car, I dare say. Well, it’s probably true what they say about us guys and cars, and I don’t mean the whole ‘compensation theory’, just our love for four-wheeled means of transport ;)

Since you said “she's” hawt and makes you happy in your pants, I suggest Tanya.

Tanya Toyota. Has a ring, doesn't it?

    Bride of Frankenhoopty?

Serendipity is good, but given the general population you live in, you'd have to explain it to everyone and that's no fun.

    I kinda like KatyBeth's Chariot.

  • Ambulance_Driver

It's not that I couldn't afford one, T4, it's that I had liability only insurance on the first one, and no way to scrape together the down payment on another truck, new or used. To do so would have meant at least a month of winter riding on my motorcycle, working extra overtime, and not seeing my daughter – I can't pick her up from her mother's on a motorcycle.

I needed, at minimum, 10% down payment on any vehicle, new or used, to obtain financing, and I could only get financing on a used vehicle five years old or less, and with less than 100k miles.

Given those parameters, and with the (totally surprising) finance terms Toyota offered me, I wound up paying only $100 more monthly for a brand new truck than I'd have paid for one with 91k miles on it, and this one has a 100k warranty.

And no, it's not a car. It's a truck. I can't haul all the stuff I use for teaching in a car. Far too small, and I didn't relish spending the next 10 years wedging my frame into a small car.

    Purty! :-)

    Vera.

“[Jayne is walking menacingly towards Mal with a large gun]
Jayne: Six men came to kill me one time. And the best of 'em carried this. It's a Callahan full-bore auto-lock. Customized trigger, double cartridge thorough gauge. It is my very favorite gun.
[he holds the gun out to Mal]
Mal: [exclaims in Chinese] You offering me a trade?
Jayne: A trade? Hell, it's theft. This the best gun made by man. It has *extreme* sentimental value. It's miles more worthy 'n what you got!
Mal: What I got? She has a name.
Jayne: So does this. I call it Vera.
Mal: Well, my days of not takin' ya seriously are certainly comin' to a middle. “

Sa-WEET! Of course, I have a previous version of that truck…

Oh, and Luna for the name.

  • mrmacs

Very purty new truck. Much nicer than my 2001 Dodge Deerslayer.

    Suggested name: “My Precious”

    Though KatyBeth may get jealous.

  • Geoffrey

I was going to suggest “Vera”, but was beaten to the punch.

However, I still have a couple geek-related suggestions.

Serenity (you could always use a little more.)
River (the puns are rife with this one.)

    Majel (Full power to impulse!)

    How about “Silver Steed”?

  • T4

Don't get me wrong: it seems like a sweet ride ;) It's just a thing that continues to surprise me: the car size in the US. Here in The Netherlands, most people would consider such a truck (or a SUV, for instance) far too overdone. With all due respect, ambulance personnel in here would normally never buy a beast like this, not because they can't afford it, but because they rather spend their money on a bigger or more luxurious house. It must have to do with the big distances you Americans are willing to drive by car (for me, holiday abroad is about the only reason to drive for longer than 2-3 hours).
