One Sentence Review of Avatar

Dances With Wolves on another planet, except the villain is that evil corporation from Aliens and not the U.S. Army.

Also, the most visually impressive film I have ever seen. It is positively lush, and makes you totally rethink the limits of CGI.

Okay, that was three sentences, but I really liked this film. You should go see it.

Basically, Dances With Wolves, except that the Lieutenant Dunbar role is a disabled marine who is driving a genetically engineered “avatar,” which is an alien body grown with strands of his own DNA mixed in, which allows him to control it via a neural/virtual reality interface.

The Sioux are the alien race being pushed off their land, and the U.S. army is a greedy corporation exploiting the planet for its natural resources after they've depleted those of Mother Earth.

But if you go to movies to see a good story and not look for political subtexts, you'll like it. It's an amazing visual feast.

I can't watch it for the very reason of the plot. Just doesn't sit well.

I'd get wrapped up in the plot and start ignoring the SFX and coolness.

Why can't he make a happy fuzzy heart movie?

And unlike Dances With Wolves, it even has a happy ending!

I don't have much to compare it with as Up! is the only movie I have ever watched in 3D, but the 3D seemed off a bit. If you forget the left wing slant, I thought it was a good movie.

What I need to know is would it be appropriate to take my 7 yo daughter to see it?

Well, aside from lots of shooting, explosions and screaming, there is no gore and precious little profanity or sexual themes.

It may be scary for a seven year old, but there's nothing that you could consider an “adult theme.”
