FYI: The Internet Does Not Have Handrails

Nor does it have lifeguards, or cushions, or airbags, and it is peopled with millions of inhabitants who couldn’t give a rat’s ass about your bruised feelings.

In other words, it’s Darwinian.

But some people haven’t quite grasped that. Case in point:

…and i’m loving the negative feedback on the comments i leave on the blogs of heartless people mocking the death of michael jackson. keep it coming people =]

This comes from a young commenter and fledgling blogger. I’ll not link it directly, lest her internet spanking come much too early in her career.

But I will offer some advice: Don’t bait people this way, young lady. You will almost surely invite far worse than you were prepared for.

There’s a word for what you’re doing. It’s called trolling when someone pollutes another person’s forum with negative and disrespectful comments. And let me tell you, people despise trolls.

And when they retaliate, they’re not going be sensitive to your feelings or to the fact that you’re only eighteen. They’re going to get nasty, and I fear that in your naievete, you have no real concept of what nasty really is.

But you will, if you continue along this path.

So go cue up Thriller on your iPod, surf YouTube for some Michael Jackson videos, and learn to work and play well with your neighbors in this big sandbox we call the blogosphere.

Consider that your free lesson in Netiquette from the Ambulance Driver.

The internet and the blog have become dandy places for those who might not have the balls or intelligence (not to mention that most don't seem have any intelligence at all) to comment in person to hide out behind the anonymity of. All of us who invite comments, or make them, invite ourselves to become prey of them. You're right, AD, this chick (presuming it's a teen girl, no doubt blonde as well and quite possibly a cheerleader – hoo, boy does that invite response) doesn't have a clue how ugly it can get. And why is she bothering? Personally I think Michael Jackson's death is getting way more press than it deserves (think I'll do my own blog on that), but that's the media for ya.

The advice, which was excellent was free. The lessons which will follow should it not be heeded could be very costly.

Yeah snarking on something when you're in the right? Fun for everyone.Being a deliberate pain in the ass? Fun for the person who eventually puts you in your place. Not so fun for you.Whoever this young lady is, I hope she takes advantage of the advice before she manages to stuff herself into the Troll pigeon hole and lose out on getting to talk to some really nifty people.

Damn, why didn't I ever think of throwing a shit-fit on a much more popular blogger's site in order to drive traffic? It's all too easy to figure out of whom you're speaking. But I'm not giving her a visitor bump.

I think it's great that you're giving free lessons. It just takes one troll to mess up the groove for everyone else. As a "baby" to the blog world, as I am to the world of blogger, she should want to play nice with others. Kindness goes way further than smartass, attention-seeking children.

AD….I found your blog by following a link from another (MC)..and enjoyed reading it so much I've already gone back and read the past couple of months' worth. Your restraint in this "lesson" is as admirable as your chosen profession. Having been a beneficiary of the efforts of some of your colleagues you already have my highest respect by association.Unfortunately the person for whom the lesson was intended will likely ignore your advice as well as that offered by other well-meaning "adults" that have learned many of life's lessons the hard way. As I told my 19 yr old step-son recently, "I'd love to go back to being 18 or 19 because then I knew everything!" Apparently we get "stupid" as we get older. Robert***maybe it's time I start my own blog? then again, maybe not

Gotta love the so called "adults"… They do NOT realize how truly mean and nasty it can get, including photos of peoples houses, phone numbers and less than flattering pictures getting pushed out… and that's just for starters.

I am sure that all of us who read AD are too mature to teach a troll what trolling can be . If said troll gets a " bump " from her post , then maby the " bump " is food for thought . Many folk with mistaken ideals eventually grow up , so lets be gentle if we follow to the commenter .

Trollie, a "future writer for the New York Times" (SHOCKA!) should probably learn a thing or two about grammar beforehand. The literary world only has room for one person who utilized sporadic capitalization, and his name was e.e.cummings. Ass.

What an excellent read, especially for a young blogger like myself. I will keep in mind that my feelings may not be on the minds of my readers, lol. Great diction by the way, makes me want to reunite with Webster. This young lady seems to be not unlike many young ladies. One of the commenters before me stated that you get stupider with age, obviously sarcastically. While there is some truth to losing your wits at much older ages, I can't believe how true it is how much you realize you don't know as you age; especially in this profession. As a paramedic student I was a pure genius. I knew everything and had no idea how ill-equipped I really was. As I entered into the field training program with my department I was even cockier, and couldn't wait to show off my intubation and IV skills. When I finally ran my first high-priority call in a BLS fire district as a lone paramedic, I quickly realized exactly how dumb I really was.I think it will be years before this young blogger finally realizes what great advice you have given her, if ever. Its almost like being in high school and your parents trying to explain how being cool doesn't really matter, and how important responsibility is. thanks for the good read.by the way, great quote RM!

The fact that you have to be told that you don't know a gorram thing proves it.The fact that you keep insisting that you do also proves it.At eighteen (unless you have been seriously abused) you don't have any life experiences to speak of, and if you do you usually don't brag about them.
