The name of the blog is A Day In The Life Of An Ambulance Driver. It was intended to be my creative outlet, and a way for me to polish my writing and trial-balloon new stories.

It’s never been a purely medical blog. I write about my job, my interests and my hobbies, and my bitches and beefs. It’s a microcosm of whatever is going on in my life at that particular moment, hence the title.

And frankly, I rather like the fact that my blog is neither fish nor fowl nor good red meat.

Lately though, the days in the life of this ambulance driver that I am inspired to write about have little to do with work. In an effort to stave off impending burnout, I’ve been trying to do more for myself, and obsess less about work. Hence, more guns and miscellaneous stuff, and less medicine.

And I know that pimping myself and the book may get tiresome as well, and believe me, it’s no less tiresome for me. But Kaplan Publishing took a chance on me, primarily from what they read in this blog, and I owe it to them to promote the book whenever I can.

(And it’s a damned good book, available for only $24.95 retail!)

I know that EMS stories are why many of you read, and I’m sorry I’ve disappointed you of late.

But just as many more seem to like my (admittedly) non-expert anecdotes and commentary on guns and such.

And a few Anonymi hate pretty much everything I write, but apparently continue to read anyway. (And bless your hating little hearts for it. – Ed.)

So I suppose my question is, what would you like to see more of? Go back to opining primarily on medical issues and sharing my EMS stories with you, or keep doing what I am now?

I’ll tell you right now that I’m not going to cease being an EMS/gun/daddy/potty humor blogger just to please a vocal few people who would presume to dictate my blog topics, but I am interested in what you’d like to read, and I’ll try to give you more of it.

Let me know your preferences in comments.

I like the medical posts, but that's just my opinion and this is your blog. ;-)
  • Curt Sampson
I like the EMS stuff the best; not due to the EMS content itself, but because that's when your writing is at its best, I feel. It's very amusing (well, ok, funny as hell), but also makes one think.

The gun stuff? I find it dull. I also think it doesn't have to be that way; I'm not into hunting, either, but I enjoyed your hunting stories. You obviously love it though, so why not take a different approach to writing about it? Ditch all the freedom/2nd ammendment stuff; you'll notice that writers, despite also having a hobby/profession deeply entwined with constitutional rights in the U.S., don't go on about it so much. Instead, figure out what it is about your hobby that shares that thing within the human spirit that gets people into hobbies. Imagine that instead of being a gun fan you're a trainspotter, and you need to demonstrate to others how humans find joy in something. Then you'd probably make a lot of converts, because I suspect that guns are more interesting than trains to most people. (I find them about equally interesting myself--well, maybe trains a bit more.)

ANYTHING YOU WRITE ABOUT IS GOLD KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK

Ive been lurking for awhile. I came here for the EMS posts, but love the variety of topics you present other than pure EMS. No matter what you decided to write about, I'm sure I would be just as captivated with it, as with your EMS posts. Keep on keeping on with what your doing.
  • Sewmouse
I will delurk here to comment on this.

I'm not a big fan of guns. I don't feel comfortable around them, and know little or nothing about them. That said - I'm sure you probably aren't overly conversant in some of my hobbies, so whatever floats your boat is fine by me. Not everyone enjoys the same things - which is nice, because if we all did, none of us could afford to play!

Write about what you enjoy. I enjoy reading what you write. I can even hear the "Southern" sometimes, one of those things that makes us yankee girls swoon.

    :)
  • Jumblerant
    AD,

I love the blog. If I want more EMS based bloggage I'll go elsewhere - from your blogroll!

If I don't like one of your blogs I'll stop reading and come back for the next one.

May i suggest not trying to 'please all the people all the time' but just having a good time for yourself? Your true kinsmen will stay with you through it all.
  • Michael
I came here for the EMT stories, and I'm not a huge fan of guns, but seeing the people bitching about you exercising your rights actually makes me want to see more gun posts. Its like trolling them without actually trolling.

But above all, write whatever keeps you from burning out
  • Jeff
Ditto to anyone who said Star of Life.
  • Angela
Past practical jokes. I know there are more than what you've shared.
  • mamapajama
I do prefer your EMS and personal stories to the book pimping (which I can understand) and the gun obsession (which I cannot). I have a young friend who was killed messing around with a gun that wasn't locked up properly at his friends house, therefore I am completely biased about guns, admittedly. When I read that you bought your VERY young daughter a gun, I almost called it a day as far as your blog goes. That is just so wrong, on so many levels, in my opinion. BUT, it's your life and I'll continue to check back and see if you write any more good stories.
  • Hootie Mac
I am going to read it no matter what it is. I might not understand the EMS stuff but I like the way you write, the rhythm of it, and am just a little frightened of your brain.
  • Ambulance Mommy
AD, i'm going to echo almost everyone and say "write what you want"

It's your blog, so you get to say what goes on here and what doesn't.

If the particular story you posted that day doesn't seem to appeal to me, or any other reader, then we can simply just skip it. No harm, no foul.

The point of blogging for a lot of people is to put out there what they are thinking, stories of their lives, etc. Each piece of your life is a part of you, and it's natural for you to want to share that. So keep sharing! We are here to listen, comment, and keep coming back for more.
  • misbeHaven
I came to your blog following LawDog's "Perspectives" post, and I stayed because I like the way you tell stories. I'm not really into EMS, but I bought your book... again, because I like the way you write.

You keep writing; I'll keep reading.
  • Michelle W.
More EMS! I love it. Though I enjoy your writing and will read anyway. I miss sumdood!
  • Sue
In my opinion, some of your best posts are about your daughter. Your pride and love for her shine through in every piece.

I also enjoy your EMS pieces, though I understand job burnout and the need to take a break.
  • Ian
I just jumped in here to let you know how much I was looking forward to more of "Star of Life", but I see many others are way ahead of me!

That story has to keep going my friend, it's brilliant!
  • Leigh
I usually only lurk, but this seems like a good time to start making my own pithy remarks. I enjoy reading everything you post, but I have to admit I love the on the job and Daddy posts the most. I am always sure they will make me laugh or cry by the end.
  • 1+
Write whatever you feel like. Your blog, your say - don't turn it into a "stories on-demand" site - that just sells yourself out. Remember why you started it in the first place.
  • Anonymous
I miss the EMS stories, which I found fascinating. The gun stuff I can really do without, but that's me. I can deal with them occasionally if there's also good EMS anecdotes.
  • Steve Whitehead
I don't agree with the, "If you write it they will come." theory, but I do think that your blog should be uniquely you.

Write stuff that makes you want to come and read your blog. Write what's on your mind and in your heart. We don't need blog drones. It's your blog brau. And it's a good one.
  • Niecie
I work as a RN in a tourist mecca and our hospital is very very small, I love reading your blog, it keeps me sane to know that someone else has it just as crazy as me. I also love to hear about your daughter and I am also a gun person, maybe not as much as you but I grew up around them and my dads family has just about every gun you can imagine. Keep writing whatever!! I'll still read it and I also bought your book and am waiting not so patiently for it.
  • Niecie

keep on doing what you're doing chief
  • Kate
I agree also; it's your blog, so you should do whatever you want with it. But since you asked.... I really like your EMS stories and hearing about your daughter. In fact, I'm going to go order your book right now. No joke. Amazon.com!
  • Angie
I agree with California Girl, It is your blog - so write what you want to.
I read your blog coz I like what you write, if a piece doesn't interest me then I will skip it and read the next. I always come back tho.

I found your blog while looking for EMS stories, and I must say that everything I read here I enjoy. I have bought your orignial book and plan on getting the new one. I realy enjoyed the "Winter Wings" post and am looking forward to the rest of "Star Of Life". Thanks for your writing. Levi
  • Lexi
Well it's your blog and your choice to write what you want. However, I could not care less about guns (maybe it has something to do with being Canadian lol) and so I haven't been reading your blog as much of late. I read for the work related stuff and I like reading about your daughter, the gun episodes are a little too over the top for me. But in the end it's your baby - do whatever floats your boat , makes your gun go bang or what have you.
  • Michele
    Since you asked :-)

I'm a huge fan of your EMS posts! I enjoy the medicine, your perspecives on the patients and families, your experiences with nurses and doctors, and laughing with you about partner experiences. Thanks for filling us in on what that's all about!
  • Kat
It's your blog - write as you wish!!! "You" - your wit, wisdom (or, depending on the story, lack thereof, lol), and personality are what keeps folks coming back.
  • IceFire
Just keep doing what you're doing, and keep it coming! Med stuff, gun stuff, potty humor, motorcycle stuff, stories about KatyBeth, everything. Oh, and when do we get a new installment of Star of Life, Hmmm????
  • stephan
your blog, do what you wish. I'll keep reading it.
  • Joeymom
Um... whatever you feel like writing about? It's your blog. I'm just here to read it.
  • Cher
Any topic, as long as it's humerous or heartfelt. Guns are *meh* I own 'em and I'm a good shot with a 22....but unless there's humor or drama related to the gun-posts I skim and check back later for other stuff.
I do need some Star of Life already dude!
  • Simian
Love guns...love reading about med stuff...love reading about your kid. Keep yourself sane in whatever way you can. (although a little insanity goes a long way towards keeping life interesting)
  • Ross
Well, this ought to teach you to ask for pats on the head. Now make sure that you read ALL these comments,AD!

And get back to work, will ya? Obviously the only thing we all don't like is when you don't put up a new entry! ;-)
  • Anonymous
I like just about everything you write AD. Just don't quit. Seems like a lot of the bloggers I've been reading forever are quitting this year. Some of them because of the haters out there who can't seem to help sharing the non-love at every opertunity. I'm planning on buying the book as soon as I can. Keep doing what you are doing, if it ain't broke don't fix it! Janet
  • Harriet
I like it all. I'm just glad to see a post from you, whatever it's about.
Now that I'm only a short time away from getting my EMT-B license (and yeah, I'm going on to Paramedic) I find myself learning just as much from your non-EMS stories as from the Saga of Sumdood.

Keep writing about life, whatever is in it that makes you happy, and may you have much more of the same.
  • AnneBethMN
I LOVE everything you write, whether it's medical, gun pron, or family related...keep it up!
  • Kristine
reading your blog is like hearing my husband's work stories (which I enjoy!), and since he also enjoys the range, and loves being a Dad, I really, really enjoy reading whatever you have to say. So, just speak your mind, and don't worry about the rest.
  • virtualquilter
You write well, so just write. I enjoy reading a good story regardless of the content.
  • serverwench
Write whatever makes you happy. :)
  • steph6138
Do what you do best - write about *your* life, et al - guns/KatyBeth/EMS and whatever else wanders in front of you. You have a gift for relating life as it happens - keep it up!
  • Julie
more of everything please - i find your EMS stories hilarious ... i'm a gunny so anything guns is good - as a mum of 2 little girls, i like hearing about your daughter ... stories about your relationships / past are also interesting ... so please just write what interests you and i'll read it ...

vw: sagones ... is that what happens to guys in their 70s?

I like everything. Please bring back star of life though.
  • Krista Leuning
I prefer the EMS posts, but like most of the other comments, just write what keeps you sane, and not burnoutish.
    Good luck, Krista Leuning

I discovered your blog because of your posts regarding medicine and your stories of being a Paramedic on the street. I remember reading your posts, and the complete archives, thinking about the lessons you learned as a medic on the street and using those lessons throughout my education and time as a new Paramedic. That is why I continue to read your blog almost 3 years after stumbling upon it. If you feel that you wish to take your blog in a different direction that is your choice to make, but I will choose not continue to read. And the simple fact is that I respect your political opinions, but do not share them.
  • Mrs.C-TW
I am a new follower to your blog so my input may not mean much. But I love the balance of guns, daddy, EMS, and such. In fact I really LOVED your last posts on your guns. It reminded me of some good times at the range with my Dad. I also just bought your book and thoroughly enjoyed it. I also pimped it out to a friend who is an EMT, and she is going to be loaning it to a co-worker... so take heart word is spreading.
  • EDNurseasauras
Hey, thanks for expanding our horizons. Expound on whatever makes you happy.
  • Budd
write what you need to write.Or whatever sumdood forces you to as he holds you hostage, because you walked out with a GUN.
  • dylthedog
AD its your blog I am happy to read what you put on it. Keep writing. Its all good stuff.

I enjoy the little window into your life - write what you want. It's all good.
  • TheRedHead Who Reads
Write what pleases you and we will be here to read it, as always. I check in just about daily to see if anything new is posted and I'm delighted when there's a new blog.

I've enjoyed the EMS writing as I'm a hospital employee; I'm glad I didn't go into EMS work but appreciate the tales from the field.

When you write about family and friends, I can always relate to that, the caring, warm and funny relationships. The humor - oh gosh - I've laughed so hard I've gone into wheezing fits! :D

The guns - hey, that's fine, too, as it brings to mind fond memories of my dear Dad with his gun collection, when I helped him load ammo when I was a kid and the target practicing in the backyard. He and I had such good times.

When you write about what happens in your day, sometimes I feel like we're all experiencing it with you because the reality of the situation rings so true.

Keep writing what pleases you - and you can count on us to be there!
  • Anonymous
Your Blog, you write about whatever the hell you want. You do it well enough a whole lot of us keep coming back for more.
  • Anonymous
Let's see, I'm a FERN, my dad's from WV, my kid is a chronic....bring it on. And my hubby likes ya too.
  • Sashka
Personally, I truly enjoy (and miss) your EMS posts, and love reading about your days with KatyBeth. The gun posts, I skip right over. I just don't care. But it is *your* blog, ergo you should write about what tickles *your* fancy. It's my own job to sort out what I want and don't want to read. Keep up the good work, and I hope you find a way out of your rut soon.
  • DJMooreTX
Kirk's got it. Katy Beth. Guns. Sumdood.

    And EMS whenever you can.
  • Anonymous
    well, since you ASKED...

I bookmarked you for the EMS, SOL, Sumdood diaries. If it is one of your gun days, I'll skim through it but I'm dissapointed there's no new EMS info. But no biggie, I can just check on Nurse K and see what she has written.

fwiw, there are a lot of good gun blogs/sites out there but very few really good EMS blogs (plenty of sucky ones though).
  • Warren
Guns, Guns, Guns. While the EMS stuff is what drew me to begin with, it's the gun stuff I keep hoping for.
  • Barbara
I read your blog because you tell a good story. Doesn't matter what the story's about, I just like to hear you tell it.

(Already bought the book--twice, once for me and once for a friend.)
  • Erin
Write what makes you happy. I may not care for guns but damnit, you do, and you have a constitutional right to love your guns like you do. It makes me happy to read what makes you happy.

I came for the EMS stories, but I stay for the happy AD.

    WOW! 82 positive comments.
    Three cheers to #1 Dinosaur.

    Put it in gr8 perspective.

P.S. watching Oprah today. Had 2 guys out of Seattle Washington that are making Bacconaise. Couldn't help but think of you.

81 comments so far, so sorry if I am repeating something someone already said. (I'm the laziest guy I know.)

How about that story about the partner, that I believe you put in her place awhile ago?

You have hinted at it before, but I think I am not the only one waiting with bated breadth.

    Here's to waiting.

Please continue as you are now.....your stories experiences are great whether ems related or not....loved the one about louisiana by the way....
  • MiniKat
Write what you feel and live. That's what your log is about and that's what I come here to read.
  • Matt M
I do not care for the gun posts. On the other hand, we are talking about East Texas and Louisiana, so we are talking about a gun ownership culture.

A Day In the Life (of anyone) is not just about working. It is about family, recreation, church, food, and looking at what those girls think they ought to wear.

I would like to hear more about what keeps the routine nature of even this job from getting boring. How do you stay happy about going to work?

I have enjoyed reading Siren Voices, where the blogger sets the scene with some great descriptions. That is also what I like to read here.

I gave my son, who just turned 17, your book for his birthday. He believes that he wants to go into medicine. Please write some observations and advice for people who want to go into medicine to "help people", or to "make money."

Thanks for writing, and keep it up. Hurricane season is just around the corner. How are you and your "clients" going to get ready?

    AD,

I have to say the medical tales and Katy Beth stories are the best. Far and away.

But I didn't come here to read about these specific subjects. I drifted over based on the comments you leave on LawDog. I like the way you think, regardless of the subject.

I suspect, even where I strongly disagreed with your POV on a particular subject, I would still enjoy reading it, because of teh manner in which you grind data between your ears.

Write what comes -- the absolute worst blogs are those where the bloggist has nothing to say "on topic", and spends an hour each day saying blabbing on about stuff even THEY aren't interested in.

    Your stuff? Why, I'd pay

    twice

what I currently do to subscribe! [grin]
  • seticat
You're fine just the way you are. ;]
  • *~*Nicole*~*
I love what you write about! Funny thing is, none of this s*** interests me: I'm scared of guns, and blood, and people dying. I've already got your book so no need to see it pimped repeatedly. But still....I keep reading. It's your humor and wit and general view of the world that interests me. I don't care what you write about, just do it often! No burnout!
  • Leah
more EMS stories if you've got 'em and feel like sharing, please!
  • Walrilla
I want to hear exactly what YOU want to write about. I've read your book and your blog, and I daresay you can make any topic interesting and something I want to read.

What he said. I will totally participate in the love-proving bacon drive.

I read you in the main because of the way you write, not the subject matter. I'm one of the grammar nazis, and it's a relief that I never go through your blog with a mental red pen. I can't overstate how appreciative I am of that fact. Add in your obvious grasp of narrative structure, pacing, & humor, and I read you to remind myself how I want to write.

And for the giggles. 'Cause God knows I'd love a good excuse to whap my ex-husband in the face with a plate o' whipped cream.
  • night lightning woman
There's nothing wrong with a concert artist with the power to make a Stradivarius sing who plays a little fiddle to lighten up. Survive, grow, move on. Change your venue, even, but keep the reasonance of the human interest when you can. You can make me laugh out loud, and you can make me cry. That kind of depth in writing is a gift.
  • Birdie23
I can understand the burn-out and pretty much hitting the wall at my job. I like the Katybeth,EMS,Guns(which I've learned a few things)So write what ya want. I tune into your blog daily. I've passed it onto my sister, who's a nurse in CO.
  • Ted
You probably already know how I'll vote (more EMS and SOL)--I suspect I'm one of the "vocal few people who would presume to dictate [your] blog topics". I'd apologize for that if I seriously thought it offended you.

That said, writers of your caliber are too damned rare, and I'd encourage you to keep writing, whatever you write.
  • tgtsmom
I will read whatever you write, just 'cause I think you're that good. That said, KatyBeth stories are usually my favorites, followed by Sumdood and real life stories from you past, your work and your travels.

Face it, you're just a fun guy to read about.
  • swampthingFI
It's not just the story, it's how it is told.

    You has it.

I was going to delurk and post a comment, but everyone else already said everything I was going to say so I'll save my comment for another time. Love ya AD. Keep doing what you're doing and doing it for you. When you start to tailor yourself for the people who read your blog you lose your original flavor and than lose your following anyway. *sings-we love you just the way your are*
Oh crap-I guess that was a comment. I'm no longer a lurker.
  • Old NFO
Screwem, write what ever you feel like! That's what I do, and honestly could care less if people read it. It's an outlet that we are not getting paid for, credit for, or anything else!
  • Anonymous
    My preference:

I love the stories you tell. Whether they're about KatyBeth, or BP or a prank you pulled years ago.

I'm not as big on the gun blogging, but hey, it's your blog, who am I to say what you should put on it.
  • the pistolero
AD, your posts are worthwhile reading no matter the subject. But I know that's not so helpful. ;-) So since you asked, I'd like to see you write about more of your favorite music. As a blogger I've gotten good mileage out of that topic. I think it'd be interesting to see what you could do with it.

#1 Dinosaur -- with THE cutest picture -- may have hit gold there.

Life gettin' you down? People annoying you a tad too much? Come to your blog for love and happiness -- well, kinda.

I'm teasing you, but if you had all these people in a room would you believe it? That they're all telling you to do what you want and nobody is giving you any crap about anything -- altho, there does seem to be a general opinion that they're not big gun nuts. That's interesting.

For me, if I had 50 some goshdarn people patting me on the back, I'd count myself as a darn lucky person.

OR -- were you just doing a contest for a Friday to see biggest number of comments?
  • dneylon
Please write more, EMT, gun, Katie Beth, rambling, friends, ex's, whatever, stories.

I'm here to read what you write. The subject has never mattered.
  • LL
I think somewhere in a previous post there was mention of coke and strippers. Let's get back to that.
  • rayanne
I'm pretty much saying the same thing as most readers so far. This is your blog, write what you want. For those who do like it will read and laugh and agree, or even cry, you've made that happen a couple of times. I'm not in the EMS field, and I wouldn't have come over here just to read about that, but have learned a couple of things along the way in between the stories about Katie Beth, family, guns & bacon. Those who don't agree on a particular topic, oh well.
The day you write for someone else, and not yourself, is the day you should stop writing completely.
  • Linda
I've gotten you book also and loved it. Think we all agree that we come here and enjoy the life of AD, not just for the EMS hell you are put through daily.
  • #1 Dinosaur
My answer to your question is the same as all the above ("It's your blog," "Write what you want," etc.)

I want to answer a different question; the one I think you're really asking, but don't know how.

Why would you write this post in the first place? You clearly understand the whole "it's your blog" thing, and it's < HREF="http://ambulancedriverfiles.blogspot.com/2009/04/why-yes-happy-hospitalist.html" REL="nofollow">ridiculously obvious

that you are perfectly secure not giving a rat's ass what anyone thinks of you. So why would you solicit our opinions?

I think it's because part of what may be going on in your Real Life(tm) is some loneliness, and what you're really looking for is some lurve. So without trying to parse posting preferences, here it is straight up:

Behind these screens are real flesh-and-blood people who give a damn, whether you post gun stories, EMS stories, KatyBeth stories, or your grocery list. Our regard for you may have come from the blog, but it doesn't depend on the blog. Even if you never wrote another word, our feelings wouldn't change. We love you, and we care about you.

    So there.
  • Murphy
As I have written in email to you before, I appreciate the stories that illuminate the humanity of what we do. They remind me that these old ladies that I drive in the big box taxi to dialysis have earned their time on this planet and deserve my respect. I've even gotten to know some of them a bit better because of your stories. You help me want to be a better EMT.

I like the stories that illuminate the humanity of day to day living as spouses and parents. The challenges we face, the feelings we have the thoughts we battle, are all part and parcel of the deal. You help me want to be a better spouse and parent.

I like the firearm discussions. Not because I want to wipe out humanity, but because I enjoy the artform of the sport. You make me want to be a better, responsible firearm owner.

I like the toilet humor, because there is nothing more human than bodily functions. And, nothing is funnier than bodily functions at inopportune times--when it's someone ELSE. You make me want to laugh more.

Frankly, AD, your talent is a blessing that would be wasted if you didn't share it among your various media. As a greedy reader of yours, my only disappointment comes when I check the blog and find no new entries for more than a day or so. I'll stop before I blow entirely too much sunshine up your ass, but know that most of us just want to hear what's happening in the life of AD.

Shameless beg from an EMS type. More EMS stuff. Hehehe.
What you like to share is good for me.. I like it all!!

Sumdood is always cool too though... It's scary how true it is!
  • Priss
Hey, you know, I like the medical stories, but your other items are no less interesting. I started here for the medical stories, and I stay because I lovec everything else.

Of course you're going to pimp your book. Don't you make some money off of the sales?

If people really don't like it, why are they still hanging around? I think some people just need something to bitch about.

Men talking about guns kinda turns me on. Probably why I married a soldier all those years ago. It's kinda sexy when men talk about manly things.

Now I need some time... *ahem*... alone...
  • Crucis
Do whatever you believe is best. It's your blog.

    Write for yourself.
  • Used Lion
It is your blog, do as you want!
I enjoy all of your stuff because you are super at putting to paper what is on your mind. and your range is fantastic.

Don't stop. If you try to p,ease everyone you WILL fail. All of us rednecks who can read love your stuff and we read it to those who can't.
  • Charissa
I like reading a little bit of everything,EMS or not.
  • brendan
Word. If people don't think you have anything of value to say outside of EMS, they probably take EMS and themselves too seriously to begin with.

Do I enjoy your "work" posts? Of course, because I usually learn something from them. But there's a thousand EMS blogs out there, and I could probably learn something from many of them. That's not why I keep coming back.

You keep doing what you're doing. Can't please everybody, nor should you try. THAT'S what kills a blog.
  • EMT-B in training_Tim
Personally I'm more interested in the EMS stuff. I think regardless it is good for an audience to see all sides of their blogger, but if the core topic is what brought people to you, then you do need to keep coming back to it regularly. But to contradict myself, the blogger has to enjoy what he/she is writing or else the writing will suffer, either in quality or quantity.

Summary: Do what makes you happy, but I want moar EMS
  • NJ Public Servant
You continue to post about exactly what you feel you want to post about. Make no compromises.
  • RevMedic
Personally, I'd like to see a video of your interperative dance showing the mating behaviors of the Sumdood family, puncuated by your renowned Borborigamus Theorem.
  • Nikki
What would I like to see more of?

I'd like to see more of the things that please

    you.

I'd like to see people remember that, when it comes right down to it, this blog was created

    by

    you and

    for

you, first and foremost as a form of catharsis, like 99% of blogs are.

I love to read about your 'bolance escapades, I'm touched by the complete and utter adoration with which you talk about your daughter, and I get a serious kick out of your potty humour. I don't know a lick about guns, though, so when you've updated about a little bit of recoil therapy with your Glock 17 and High Standard Crusader 1911 - whatever the hell those are - I skim, skip, and come back later.

No offense, AD, but it doesn't affect much in the grand scheme of my life.

I just wait until you've written about something I can understand, like the eternal inconvenience that is Sumdood. Then I read, I laugh, I think, and I walk away a little happier for having found your blog however many years ago I did.

Write about whatever the hell you want, man. For what it's worth, I'll always be reading. :)
  • medicblog999
    It's your blog AD!
You write what you want and we can choose to read or not. You are not in EMS 24hrs a day, 7 days a week. Your job does not make you the man you are!

Judging by the amount of comments, I really don't think you have a great deal to worry about. You may loose a few readers who have difficulty with the gun stuff, but that shouldn't stop you writing about what you love.

    I'll still be reading!!!
  • Midwest Chick
It's your blog. Blog what you want. I like the EMS stories, the gun stories, the KatyBeth stories. It's the WAY that you write that brings me back every day.
  • Martini
I have really enjoyed all of it. I like the ems stuff, love the gun stuff and the stories about your daughter usually crack me up. NCIS and House, seriously? Just keep writing and I'll keep reading.
  • Anonymous
It's all good! Maybe a lil more "sumdood" and Star of Life.
  • Anonymous
origanal found you by following one of the persptives posts stayed cause you were worth reading by yourself too.
  • Jean
It is your blog. You do what you want with it. My own selfish perspective? I prefer EMS stories. I'm not a big fan of gun stories although my dh would (he is not big blog reader).
  • Anonymous
Your blog is great as is, with a few minor--emphasis on minor--comments:

Write what you want, as you think appropriate. As a soaked-in-Hoppe's gun nut I appreciate your gun tales, look forward to your stories about KatyBeth (your love letter had me in tears) and would like to hear more about Sumdood and his Asian sidekick, Sumgai.

Basically, your blog is all good. Just keep biting the heads off of the trolls.

    Old Squid.
  • 40lizard
As a fellow Southerner, soon to be EMT (yes, I know I'm nuts!), parent, etc I enjoy all of your posts because on some level (although at times not very high) I can understand them all. You started this blog as a way to vent, create, etc and that means putting anything on the blog you'd like to!

But like the others, I would like to see Star of Life be resucitated!

You're doing fine! Take care of yourself!
  • Ayre
I'm not a fan of guns either but everything else is great. And usually when I see a post about the guns, I'll give it a quick peruse to see if there is anything interesting *to me* in it and if there isn't, I skip it. I know there will be something interesting to read next time, or the time after that even. Point being, it's your blog...while I'd like to read more about sumdood, if you feel the need to write about Katie Beth, I'm all eyes! I read because I enjoy your writing...it's not really about the content.
  • Dan
Keep doing what you are doing.
  • grandmamargie
AD, write whatever is going on in your life that you want to write about. "A Day In The Life...". I love your writing, period. That said, I'll read whatever you write. What disappoints me is when I check on you and there's nothing new. So, just keep writing. And ignore the trolls.
  • Bob S.
    More of Everything :)
  • Carey
AD, this is *your* blog. Write what you want to write! We read because we like what you want to write; but it's not about us. It's your creative outlet, remember? :)
  • Anonymous
Please, write more ambulance stories; It's what brought me here in the first place.
  • Anonymous
AD - You write whatever you want to write. I now I'll be here to read
  • Comrade E.B. Misfit
blog. You should write about whatever moves you to write.

If you do otherwise, if you write stuff because you think you should, not because you want to, blogging becomes just another frakking job.

    (word verification: "alogic"
  • Dawna
I can't remember how I found you, but I enjoy reading about life as an EMT, your philosophical musings and life outside the ambulance. Like others here, I'm not a big gun fan, so those entries I do skip over.

But I agree - it is your blog and you can write about what fits best for you.
  • Epijunky
AD, if it got to to the point where all you wrote about were recipes that consisted of geritol, ensure, and bacon... You'd still be at the top of my *Must Read Daily* list.

    Keep doing what you do.
  • Ian
    keep going as you are.

all of it is well written and i find the humor some of the best on the net
  • Kath
Definitely write what YOU want. When you sit down here, whatever comes across the keyboard -- that's it.

Just like anybody's life, good days/bad days/weird days, they're all there.

This has to be, or should be, one place for you to do what you want.
  • Bob
    do, anyway.
  • Rick O'Shea
As a gun nut, father, and burned-out healthcare drone, I say keep up the good work.

I come here every morning, and plan to continue to do so.

And... you never did tell us what happened to Bitchy Partner...
  • Ross
AD, while I truly love reading the EMS entries - particularly the names that you give to people and places to keep them from knowing you're writing about them - I enjoy all your entries.

As for the gun-blogging... if only you weren't a... *shudder* Glock owner. ;-)

Hmm... word verification: ilien. Is that a sick "undocumented worker"?
  • Peri1020
I can pretty much echo what California Girl said. I'd rank your EMS stories #1, Star of Life #2, Family Life #3 and Guns #4 (just because I'm not a gun person). You're a fantastic writer and I love to read just about everything you write.

Your blog is about your LIFE, so write whatever you want. I'll keep coming back for more.
  • Abi
more other posts, about everything else you write about. Oh, and more Star of Life would certainly not go amiss. But then I am just being greedy and demanding.
  • EMTstuckinScotland
Living out of the country and seeing the NHS at its finest (worst?) I miss EMS from the states. Reading your blog makes me yearn to come back to the states and volunteer. I do however, love reading your daily life and your gun posts. So pretty much keep doing what you're doing and Im looking forward to reading your book.
  • Vetnurse
I have just discovered your blog and am really enjoying it.

As you ask us what you should write about, my reply is.

You call your blog "a day in the life of an ambulance driver" it does not end with ..."at work only".

Write what you feel like writing about. Even if what was written was not something l liked or agreed with it is interesting to get a different perspective on it.

A good mix makes it more interesting and fun to read. A bit like eating a steak and fruit salad every day. Rather than just an apple a day.

I think you have the perfect mix of steak and fruit salad :-)
  • MedicMatthew
Kelly, if you build it they will come.

If you write it, I will read.

    That is all.
  • Anonymous
    It's all good!
  • WVmedicgirl
I originally started reading your blog as an EMS fan, but have found that I really enjoy all of your writing and find myself reading all of your posts. I have become even more interested trying to learn about all the gun stuff...it caught my attention and now I want to learn more...thanks AD for making my days brighter no matter what you post! Do what keeps you happy, or at least sane enough to function.
  • OrangeNeckInNY
Dude, you can write about anything you like. I'll read it. And if I have a comment to add, I'll do that too.

You're writing for yourself; not for the damned trolls. We just happen to be innocent bystanders watching trolls meet the runaway train.
  • Jo
I came (from the other side of the Atlantic ;-) ) for the EMS stories - I've stayed for both those and everything else.

I love your blog - you are the polar opposite on the political and social spectrum to me - however, I really enjoy finding out about all aspects of your life and your beliefs, even if sometimes I find it hard to understand your point of view...

So - write about everything! :-) Whatever you want, whatever helps relieve your stress.
  • PurpleRN
I bookmarked your blog for the EMS content. I am not a fan of guns so your spate of recent posting holds no interest for me.

I'll probably stop coming if there isn't more EMS content. *shrug*

Nothing personal, but the blog right now isn't doing it for me :)
  • John McElveen
    Dude,

Like you once said to me when I first started, "Write what you want to write from the heart." If you write it- they will come. Then they'll read the blog!

    LOL

    J
  • The Happy Medic
I enjoy most posts, like the rest. Not a fan of the "gun love" humor, but I keep coming back.

Stress relief these days is hard to find. On the range or on the 'puter, I say keep it going. I'll be here, not there.

    HM
  • Starik Igolkin
Your blog is a good read just the way it is - a mix of EMS, guns, and interesting sense of humor. Thank you for the chuckles, and occasional need to drain the keyboard. Looking forward to more of the same mix, and hopefully continued Star of Life as well.
  • Bob Mueller
Heck, I'll take any of your writing you want to share. Star of Life would be good. I just like the way you write.

Burnout? Muse clamming up? Time to do some homework, maybe? Here's what another 'net acquaintance had to say: http://bryonquertermous.wordpress.com/2009/04/1...>
  • UbiCaritas
Well, to be a totally selfish fangirl for a moment...
    I WANTZ MOAR EMS!

Seriously, though. While I like to read your EMS-related posts more than I do some of the others, I find the gun post interesting, and the snippets from whatever is going on in your day, ditto.

Besides, it's your blog. If this day in the life of an ambulance driver doesn't happen to be about EMS, I'll get over it and I'll also know that you're writing about that which you need to write about.

Oh, and by the way: purchased your book this evening. Can't wait to read it! See, your PAYING readers wantz more EMS, too!
  • Pappy
Write whatever lessens the stress on you. How's the weight loss going and can we look forward to seeing any more "Star of Life"?
  • California Girl
    AD-
"I am who I am and if you don't like it..." That's LL's motto, I like it. It's your blog. Write what YOU want.

I honestly am not a gun fan but I enjoy the how and what of your writings. I enjoy the grueling work day, too.

AND if I don't like it ....I skip it and read the next thing.

    No worries Be happy
  • Kirk
Guns are good. I like guns. Potty humor, eh, not so much. But some is good, too. Your best writing is when you're a Dad. But I REALLY want to learn more about Sumdood...
  • Joe
ooh, I know about burnout. Write what keeps you sane. I've already bought your book, and gotten my money's worth can't ask for more.
