Well, That Depends…

… on what you intend to use the gun for.

If you want to stick up the local liquor store or neighborhood bodega, I’d imagine you can find a suitable weapon on many a street corner for a decent price, no questions asked.

If, on the other hand, you wish to lawfully defend your life, property and home with it, the process is considerably more onerous.

FYI, even with my fairly big screen I can’t actually read what is written in the picture on these. I usually try to guess based on your comments – which I thoroughly enjoy by the way!

    Dear AD,

I need your help. I recently bought my first gun, a S&W .40 pistol, to use for self protection. I've started going to the local gun range so that I can become familiar with my new friend, and today was my first trip to the range alone. In the past I've taken my father or my brother, who kind-heartedly enough keeps the magazines loaded for me, in going alone today, I found out that I have a real problem loading the magazines. I don't know if it's because it is a new gun, or if I'm just so puny I can't put the bullet in. Also, after about 300 rounds through the gun I decided today would be a good day to give it a good cleaning. I encountered another problem though, I don't know what to use to clean the gun. I bought a pistol cleaning kit at academy and a can of something called "Break-free." Is this all I need for a happy, healthy, clean pistol? Any help you could offer would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,

Clueless, the Break Free and pistol cleaning kit oughta do it. If you’re diligent about cleaning it, lead and copper fouling of the barrel shouldn’t be a problem.

If you do shoot a lot of dirty ammo, a simple spray can of brake parts cleaner from the automotive department will work well to dissolve and loosen any crud.

Did your Smith come with a magazine loader – a little sleeve that fits over the magazine and pushes down the follower so you can load a round? If so, use it. If not, see if someone makes one for your pistol and buy one.

Give those magazine springs a little time to wear in, and they loosen up a bit.

In the meantime, work on strengthening those hands!

    Clueless,

{shameless self-promotion}I detailed my cleaning regimen after taking some new folks to the range last September – link < HREF="http://stuckinmassachusetts.blogspot.com/2008/09/clean-up-your-act.html" REL="nofollow">here<>. It’s my own personal cleaning process and it may or may not work for you. But it beats a kick in the ass with a frozen boot, so…

Outside of employment with law enforcement, is there a way to legally obtain a handgun in NYC?

It was my impression that those who had handguns for personal protection had not jumped through every NYC ordinance, or they were bribing people. Last time I checked, bribery was not recognized as legal activity in NYC. Not even in Chicago.

    markm,

No law against being friends, but a surprising number of the friends of the mayor seem to have violated all sorts of laws. Not just the current mayor. Chicago seems to be the city that consistently has the most corruption, but NYC is never too far behind. The crime is more organized than the politics.

So, asking the mayor for a <>favor<> may lead to obligations a handgun cannot get you out of, except by putting the barrel in your mouth. :-)
