God, I Love Louisiana*

And do you want to know why?

Here’s a list of all the places I went today, openly carrying a firearm on my hip:

1. McDonald’s for breakfast.

2. Several convenience stores/gas stations.

3. The Dollar Store.

4. Wal Mart (twice.)

5. Academy Sports.

6. The local Mexican restaurant (which serves alcohol, by the way).

7. The UPS store.

And nobody batted an eyelash.

In fact, my firearm garnered attention only twice; once by the cop behind me in line at Wal Mart, who offered some unsolicited, but welcome, advice on aftermarket sights for my Glock, and the second time by the cop who pulled me over on the way home.

He shined his light on the assorted shooting gear in the back of my truck, approached my window and courteously asked me if I knew why he had pulled me over.

“For weaving across the center line, I suppose,” I said sheepishly, handing him my license. “I was getting a bit sleepy. Been a long day.”

“That, and your driver’s side headlight is out,” he informed me, “but I noticed that both high beams work fine.”

That, I didn’t know. I’ll get it fixed, though.”

“Been shooting today?” the cop inquired politely. “I noticed your gear.”

“Yup, and I’m wearing my pistol now,” I informed him. “Just so you know.”

“No problem,” he said agreeably. “Just keep your hands on the steering wheel while we’re talking, please.”

“Yes sir,” I complied. “You need to see my registration and insurance?”

“Not necessary, Sir. Those blue lights wake you up enough to make it home now?”

Wide awake,” I chuckled. “Thanks.”

“Drive safe, Sir. And get that light fixed, okay?”

And then he winked at KatyBeth, waved, and drove off.

* Before anyone points it out, New Orleans ain’t really friendly territory to lawful gun owners, but then again, it’s only technically part of Louisiana. Kinda like our own photo negative of the Vatican, if you catch my meaning.

Neither Houston nor Dallas are technically Texas either, and Austin is a different dimension altogether…so I know what you mean.

Open carry is still not allowed in Texas. We’re working on it.

Now that is a wonderful example of how a stop of someone carrying legally should be handled. That is how my brother , his training officer and the training officer’s training officer would handle something like that.

    Did that make sense?

Cripes. If I went to those same places while carrying here, somebody would’ve called the cops at at least four of them, and I wouldn’t have been surprised in the least to have been drawn on.

If I lived through the day it’d be a gift from god.

I’m not a current gun owner but am a big supporter of lawful gun ownership (I’d like to learn to shoot eventually). On a side note, my friend and her fiance just got their concealed handgun licenses and to celebrate got us all pepper spray as a celebration gift. :)

    Charissa,

If you’re ever in the New Orleans area, drop me a line, and I’ll be glad to take you to the range.

I live in Illinois a notoriously anti gun state. I was visiting my wife in the hospital after surgery. I am a Deputy Sheriff and I was wearing my 1911 in a shoulder holster over a t-shirt and had denim shirt over it. She was in a private room, it was hot and the door was closed. I had my badge in a badge holder above the gun on the shoulder strap. I took my denim shirt off and was sitting in a rocking chair by her bed. The lady who delivers the meals came in and dropped off her tray and never said a word. I stayed about 20 minutes longer and had to leave for work. While driving to work my wife calls me and says that Hospital Security had come to her room and wanted to know who the man with the gun was. She explained that I was a Deputy Sheriff. I figured I had better advise my Lt. upon arriving at work. He called the hospital and spoke with security. I was standing there as he called. The Hospital Security stated they had a no weapons policy even for off duty police officers. My Lt. stated that there policy didn’t supercede state law. The conversation went downhill from there. My Lt. laughed about it and told me next time I go to the hospital make sure I leave my shirt on.

Now that, is ridiculously anti-gun. Louisiana has it right.

Do you think cops are slightly more relaxed when they pull over a mom with kids or maybe a dad with kids? When I got my speeding ticket, the cop didn’t look too tense. He was nice, I was nice, Big Monkey sang the Cops theme, it was all good. But I wonder if it would have been different if I had been a man alone in the car.

As liberal as WI is, we still have some gun rights, so that makes me happy, but IL where I work…holy crap, they’re all loony and shit about guns. Maybe we should invade and kick out all the crooks and make life better for the poor flatlanders.

As a fellow Louisiana resident, I have to agree. I used to work in the mall. it really wasn’t unusual to see someone come in wearing their gun.

Must be nice! Where I am we have concealed carry but you have to hand over your weapon if asked to “for the officer’s protection”. Bites, big time.

Oh, if he’d have asked me for my weapon, I’d have complied. I’ve been asked to do such in the past, and I can understand the officer’s motivation.

Had to remind a park ranger in Texas once to give me back my weapon, though. ;)

Dude, I was wrong. (Yes, I said it, don’t rub it in, m’kay?). Just read < HREF="http://www.wisn.com/cnn-news/19235901/detail.html" REL="nofollow">this article<> this morning. Apparently, we have an open carry law, BUT none of the cops know wtf to do with it, so they’re still mostly gonna put you down and take your gun until AFTER they determine you’re ok.

Uhhhhhhhhh, 4th amendment anyone? Especially if the state AG says it is LEGAL. Should be interesting up here when it goes to court, cuz you KNOW it’s gonna go to court.

Oh, there’s DEFINATELY a difference between how a cop feels when he pulls over a parent with a kid in the car, and no one is looking overly frightened or “weird” than when they pull over a car with one or two young males, dressed “street”, with white crusties and old burns around the lips, a pale complexion, unexplained sweating, and a nervous energy about them.

Word Verification = “orbase”, what teh US Navy would call it’s first space station.

Reminds me of the other day at work. I’m in a children’s hospital and we routinely sedate/anesthetize children for MRI scans. We allow the parents into the scanner for induction. So my patient’s father’s coming in and we tell him to empty his pockets of any metal.

Imagine the surprise on the faces of the MRI techs (and hopefully not mine) when he places his service weapon on the table (along with his badge).

Open carry is a wonderful thing. It gets people desensitized. When I open carry, I always wear a shirt and a tie.

Open carry with a long arm is also…interesting.

I assure you, you would be welcomed as liberators. We’ll pull down whatever that thing in front of Daley Plaza is supposed to be, and we will pay tribute in the manner of your people. We have many fine cheeses and sausages.

Actually, if you can take and hold Chicago, we’ll handle the rest . . . . by which I mean, go about our lives and let you figure out what the hell to do with Chicago.

Gosh that sounds like a dream. Here in Cali they’d prolly call a SWAT team down on you.

Oh well, maybe someday I can move to America.

Now, what if someone sneaked up behind you and smashed you over the head and stole your piece, then used it to go commit a crime? I see that as a possibility if people are just allowed to carry like that.
