Verbatim* Conversation With A Six-Year-Old This Morning

AD (pulling his daughter’s shirt over her head): “So, Stinkerbell, who are we pretending to be this morning – Cinderella? Hammy? Queen Narissa?”

KatyBeth: “No, Daddy! You’re Gibbs, and I’m – “

AD (confused): “Wait a minute, who is Gibbs?”

KatyBeth (rolling her eyes in exasperation): “You know…Agent Gibbs? From NCIS?”

AD (skeptically) : “Oh, that Agent Gibbs. You think I’m handsome enough to sub for Mark Harmon, honey?”

KatyBeth (firmly): “You’re more handsome than he is.”

AD: “Uh huh. I appreciate the compliment, Stinkerbell. And who are you – the cute Goth chick that’s so perky? What’s her name again?”

KatyBeth (sighing dramatically):No, Daddy, not her. I’m rather apprehensive about telling you…”

AD: “Did you just say ‘rather apprehensive’?”

KatyBeth: “It means nervous, Daddy.”

AD:I know what it means. I just didn’t think you knew what it means.”

KatyBeth: “I’m apprehensive about telling you, because I’m…Dr. House.”

AD (guffawing):Dr. House? Yeah, I can see that. Both of you are smartasses who walk with a limp!”

KatyBeth:Ooooh, snap! Good one, Daddy!”

*Pretty much. Her parts were verbatim, while mine were embellished to make myself seem wittier. Don’t know how I feel about having my six-year-old hooked on NCIS and House, MD, though. Between that and her fascination with Smilin’ Bob of the Enzyte commercails, I may have to start using the V-chip on her television.

I don’t know about Gibbs, AD. I see you more as the MacGyver of EMS!Watch the ADMac disarm a terrorist nuke in the back of his ambulance, armed only with his trusty catheter and a #11 needle, while his partner does 80 mph over the dirt road around the bayou! :-)

Hey, Ziva and Abbie are great roll models for a girl. Both are smart, can hold their own with the guys, and play a critical part in the team. Granted my daughter is 14 but I was psyched when she got into NCIS, we watch it together every week

May I bring Ms. Sunshine home with me and keep her? I know you love her and all, but from that one conversation, I love her just as much!!! *grin* And seriously, there ARE adults who don’t know what “apprehensive” means. She was just cluing you in. Just sayin’.

You should consider yourself lucky. She could be hooked on Lost and American Idol like the rest of the population. Or even worse: Hannah Montana.

Good job! she is learning something other than fluff! Which is something I am also trying to instill in my 4 yr old daughter. And it looks like KatyBeth has inherited a natural fascination with medicine! Wonder where she got that from? :)

  • Mule Breath,

AD, I’ve just spent the day listening to a variety of talking heads talk stuff about which they know too little. Your exchange with darling KatyBeth caused me to spill my beer. I miss the little darlin’. Please tell her I said so.

Much like the conversation with my 6yr old this morning where he asked if “wives obeyed their husbands”… What? “Yeah, you know the mother obeys the father” (obey your father and mother). I just replied that we couldn’t talk about it in the car on the way to school because the car was “bugged” by aliens. Then we got home at dark and he was worried about those aliens. Ugh…

Good luck with the V chip. Better to watch TV with her and talk about the stuff you watch. Not that she needs any help looking at things critically.Did she let you type this by yourself? ;-)

She could do FAR worse than watching NCIS and House. And I agree, Ziva & Abbie are GREAT role models for a young lady – would that my nieces were thus exposed. As it is, I'm subversively gifting the elder niece with Honor Harrington novels and such :)

Gay Cynic, I’d also recommend the Valdemar books by Mercedes Lackey ( start with “Arrows of the Queen”) or anything by Andre Norton if the young ladies are into fantasy. Strong female and male characters, and a very healthy awareness of good and evil. Signey Mallory in “Downbelow Station” by C.J. Cherryh is another fascinating woman in sci-fi, although not without some major flaws. (A normal person, in other words.) And yes, Admiral Lady Dame Honor Harrington rocks! LittleRed1

Our Barbies are Gibbs, Ziva, and Abby. It’s so funny. Both my girls shoot and love that Ziva can shoot so well. I think they realize it’s pretend. But, for all I know, she may shoot that well in real life. We could hope.

Oh, how funny. My 2 yo granddaughter told her daddy this past weekend, “you drive me crazy” while clenching her little hands dramatically.

awesome…just awesome. She’s got a better vocabulary than 40 year olds I know, she’s into educating herself, and she knows good role models when she sees them. Hammy is awfully cute and funny…let’s be honest here! Though that tricky RJ…now he’s got something going for him too! And to be honest, Queen Narissa, while also cracked in the head, was kind of a strong minded independant sort of type, right? :) Good job AD!
