Barack Hussein Obama…

Comments

…44th President of the United States.

Whether you voted for the man or not…

…whether you think his election heralds the change our country needs, or the ultimate triumph of style over substance…

…whether you agree with his policies, or not…

…he’s our President now.

And it’s time to stop bitching and whining and support our President.

No, I didn’t vote for the man. His views are polar opposites from my own. When he does something I don’t approve of, I’m going to rail about it publicly, but respectfully. I’m going to give him a chance to get it right, and when or if he does, I will be just as effusive in my praise as I am vocal in my criticism when he gets it wrong.

And for my fellow bitter clingers to religion and guns who might ask, “Why give him a chance that the left never gave George Bush?”

I’d ask that you consider whether you really want to model your behavior after the more strident sufferers of Bush Derangement Syndrome.

Come on now. Be better Americans than that.

We owe at least that to the office, if not the man.

. Look for the comment by "still a palin girl" (link is there so that you can verify this comment, which I find hard to believe).< />< />Here it is: Comment by still a palin girl< />January 20th, 2009 at 1:06 pm< />< />The whole thing makes me nauseous. When we have war on our soil during his time in office I will at least be able to say, “I didn’t vote for that moron.”< />< />Now to me, that looks like she's HOPING for a war on our soil, so she can say she didn't vote for Obama. And that's sickening. Even if she isn't, she would still use an attack on America as an excuse to tear down our national leadership when we need it most. < />< />< />Here's the thoughts of some totalfarkers on that comment:< />Diogenes: queezyweezel: I like the "still a Palin girl" quote: At least when there is war on our soil during his term, I can say 'I didn't vote for that moron'.< />< />WTF? Is the far right that whacked out? Yes, we are doomed to invasion by a foreign power in the next four years....Um, Who.... Our Navy would decimate any attempted invasion.< />< />"I want this country to suffer another 9/11 so I can gloat."< />< />What a nice lady.< />< />I think they pretty much called it. A military invasion is pretty much out of the question. We're still the worlds only megapower. The only attack that has a chance of landing on our soil is a terroristic one, and that is no time to be indulging in partisanship.< />< />Did anyone, right after September 11, 2001, say anything as stupid as "At least I didn't vote for Bush."? I should sincerely hope not. What we did is rally together as a country, liberals and conservatives alike. And that's what America should be about. But people like "still a palin girl" aren't about that. And that horrifies me. Good on you, AD, for reminding me that there are plenty of good people left in this country.< />< />(In the interests of neutrality, I should also say that I was disgusted with the moonbat "not my president" leftists, too. It just so happens that conservatives are the ones who lost this election, an so they're the group with the wingnuts displaying this behavior this time around. If the Republicans win the next election, you'll see me here in four years decrying this behavior from the left, too.)
  • MsZilla
Hear Hear, AD.< />< />As a staunch Republican (but one that Huckabee claims isn't a real one) I have been weary of this whole dreary mess since before Reagan left office.< />< />We have way too much work to do to deal with this. Whether or not you agree with him on any given topic, there are intelligent and effective ways to differ. Whining, being a jerk in public, "personality" politics, and all the divisive, obfuscatory BS that has been part and parcel of the functioning of the highest parts of our governmental process for so long are not among them.< />< />I also want to point out to arcanai, that that is not how the president is addressed in all cases.< />< />He's addressed as "Mr. President" to his face. He's referred to as Mr [last name here] when he's not acting in an official capacity like signing a bill, or President [last name here] when he is. The line between those last two is quite fluid in these modern times.< />< />There is no strict federal code for this; the use of the word President for the position is all that's in the Constitution. The customary usages were all setup by George Washington during that first presidency. The point was that the name itself wasn't to be glorified, but the office, and even that was to be given short shrift.< />< />The disrepect shown to President Bush wasn't in what they called him. It was in the rest of the text.
  • Randy
AD, I agree. I will support him so long as he fulfills his duties under the US Constitution, while opposing any policies I disagree with, using the soap, ballot and jury boxes as appropriate.< />< />And I will not do it Moonbat/BDS style. I have too much self respect for that.< />< />Of course, should he ever step out of his Constitutionally mandated limits, he is no longer our president and all bets are off.< />< />My loyalty is to the Constitution, not to any one branch of government and whoever is holding the seat at the moment.< />< />"Who determines what is right? Does it come down to the majority, as with any supposed democracy,"< />< />We are not (thank the deity of your choice) a democracy. We are a Constitutional Republic where the desires of the majority are limited and moderated by said constitution. "Rule of Law" IOW. Pure democracy is nothing more than legalized mob rule.< />< />"or will you yourself be the final judge to what is right and wrong?"< />< />Yes. Just as you are for yourself.< />< /> "If that's the case, what happened to the vox populi?"< />< />Limited in it's power in this country since 1789. Which is a good thing. See my comments above.
  • Hope
< />< />(thanks to AJ)< />< />And: "If you can support the troops but not the war, then I can support the country but not the president."< />< />I have vowed not to go leftard BDS, mainly because I was raised better. But I won't be stared down, marginalized, stop paying attention, or stop working to make this his only term. I pray fervently that there will be an obvious better choice to the electorate in '12.

"I'm going to give him a chance to get it right..."< />< />Who determines what is right? Does it come down to the majority, as with any supposed democracy, or will you yourself be the final judge to what is right and wrong? If that's the case, what happened to the vox populi? < />< />I admire your willingness to put partisanship aside, as both McCain and Obama had asked us to do. However, I'm worried that you still feel as if only your views are the correct ones, no matter how many other people would disagree with you.< />< />I think by "getting it right," there is no true guage for all Americans, but in your case, I hope he at least does good enough by your standards, whatever they may be. All I ask is that you give the people a chance, too; give Americans the chance to get it right as well.

AD - I see your wonderfully expressive and well-meant post has been gobbled up by a pack of pit bulls. < />< />Thank you for your post. I found it insightful and interesting and full of heart-felt intellegence.< />< />Luckily, life is not so black and white as reading through these comments would make you think.< />< />So let's all be respectful and fight the fights when they need fighting and not before the first shot is fired.

Jesus, the same debate EVERY time. Well, claiming that you will give Obama the same treatment Bush received implies that either you are as biased or stupid as you claim the "left" are or that perhaps those tactics were appropriate for the "left" to use. Either way its not a great position to have, and not effective in influencing people who are critical thinkers. As to the 2nd Ammendment. It clearly lists out rights, the Supreme Court can handle protecting them. If you think it can't point the finger at Regan, GHB, and GWB as much as at Clinton and Obama. I see 8 years of Democrat presidents and 20 years of Republican ones. On the brief abortion reference just above, how about everyone who does care about life getting behind a few condoms for stupid teens to PREVENT the problem for a change?
  • Jon
"...but the amendment never did because of the traditions set forth early on..."< />< />I've never heard the freedom from oppression described as a tradition. < />< />Then again, maybe this fits with the description of killing fetuses as family planning.
  • Anonymous
"A well regulated Militia..." was written before the existence of a Uniform Army of the United States. From various sources it seems our founding fathers never intended to have a standing Army, but a volunteer Army to be called up in times of need. the situation changed, but the amendment never did because of the traditions set forth early on.< />I support and will defend to the death the right of the People to keep and bear arms, but when was the last time someone killed 30 people in a knife attack?< />< />Justin in CA

Over his presidency, President Bush took an average of 64 days of vacation per year, or 12 weeks per year.< />< />He was on vacation 34% of the Presidency. That's disturbing.< />On a different note:< />The comments in this section actually support the statements made by Obama that when certain people feel misrepresented, they become bitter and cling to their guns and religion.< />Never has there been an assault on the 2nd amendment to the US Constitution. I do ask everyone to read it before suggesting that owning a fully automatic 30 round clip weapon somehow is defending their family.< />Great way to get the discussion going Ambulance Driver. we need more discussion on these topics.

I should clarify my "Bull****" post above. I was not intending to imply that Obama is a muslim or terrorist, simply that he has openly declared us the enemy, and pretending that he has not is as dangerous as a journalist going into an islamic terror training camp and expecting to walk out again.< />< />I don't see where there is any room for doubt about his intentions or how he will try to run the country. The things he has said, the things he has done in the past, and the things he has promised to do.< />< />I should also clarify that I am not right wing. I think Bush has eroded civil rights quite a bit as well - the "patriot" act and all that. I honestly think that Bush, McCain, and Obama are all on the same side, they just have different opinions about how fast they want to turn this nation communist.

I will attempt to shed light on every socialist action he or his "team" presents.< />< />I will defend the constitution whether he does or not!

Well, I am PROUD to say that I VOTED FOR OBAMA!!!< />< />With the choice of Old Coot and Hillbilly Woman - what choice was there?!< />< />And I am a gun-owning "hillbilly woman" from Kentucky . . .< />< />Even though our Country needs someone with the slightest bit of intelligence to run it (ahem, after dim-wit Bush), the rest of the World also needs a reason to come to respect us again as well.< />< />I didn't agree with any ONE candidate whole-heartedly, but there were FAR FEWER things with which I disagreed with OBAMA on - and the changes that he has made in 2 days are re-affirming as well.< />< />All that said, it is funny to see bloggers that I LOVE (ADA, that's you), and who I will continue to read, so different from me on the political spectrum! Just goes to show, religion and politics should never be discussed among FRIENDS!!!
  • Ambulance Driver
.< />< />Duly elected, and all that.< />< />Oppose him if your conscience says you must. Hell, I'm with you. I didn't vote for the man, and absent any major surprises that will change my mind about him, I won't be voting for him in four years.< />< />But I'm willing to be surprised in the mean time. Let's see if he can change my mind. If not, I'll oppose him every bit as actively and vocally as anyone on the far reaches of the right wing.< />< />But to call him an Islamic terrorist, or suggest that he's their plant in the White House, is quite frankly, delusional.< />< />Mind the black helicopters, now. They probably have you under surveillance.
  • Anonymous
Bull****.< />< />The man considers us the enemy. He has plainly stated such, and done so repeatedly. Unless we understand likewise, he will trample us to dust.< />< />Reporters who try to respect islamic terrorists and get interviews with them... end up with their heads cut off. The islamic extremists (not the peaceful mainstream) consider us to be their enemies. Us not recognizing that does not make them any less likely to kill us - it just makes it easier for them.< />< />Obama IS the enemy. We must fight him every step of the way - in congress, in the courts, in the media. Let them hate us, let them call us the enemy. They already do, and our magnanimity will not change that - it'll just make it easier for them to metaphorically kill us.

AD, Everyone< />I love you all.< />I am a longterm lurker. I used to be _very_ right wing. I was raised Texas baptist. < />Then I moved to Austin ;)< />Please give this president a chance.< />Speaking as someone more left than Ghandi and the Dhali Llamma.< />We ALL have bigger things to worry about than taking your guns.< />I personally can use guns, they are very handy for dealing with two legger varmints. Most people will agree, as long as your safe in your operation of them, its nobody's business.< />< />As for what is Obama going to do? < />Today he and his team did this:< />< />He re-took the oath of office because of yesterdays mis wording.< />< />He froze the pay of senior staff. Indefinitely. < />< />The house passed a bill that will cut payroll taxes which I believe will help small business retain more employees.< />< />He made 4 official calls to major players in the middle east.< />< />He meet with the economics team and the pentagon.< />< />There should be 3 executive orders tomorrow:< /> close the detainee camp at Guantanamo Bay within a year and establish a process by which the U.S. government figures out what to do with the remaining detainees; IE: They go into the court system that works for everyone else.< />< />∙ establish new rules on interrogation methods moving forward;< />< />∙ establish new guidelines for the treatment of detainees moving forward. < />< />One of my problems with gitmo and torture is they were doing it in the dark. If our Country does something we should be able to stand in the light of day and be proud we did it. Hurting people under the age of 15 who we aren't really sure of who they are - not a proud moment. < />< />Additionally, and please pardon me for linking to DailyKOS here, he is imposing sweeping ethics rules on his staff.< />http://tinyurl.com/7fjwno< />< />No gifts from lobbyists.< />No lobbying within 2 yrs of working in the WH.< />and if the public files an FOIA - The gov has to fill the request or get a review by the attorney General. But the intent is that instead of fighting FOIA all agencies should treat them as reasonable and open the records.< />< />Not one of these things says anything about taking our guns.< />< />Please keep an open mind.< />This isn't red VS blue. Thats something stupid the talking heads are pushing.< />< />This is USA.< />Our Government should work for us.< />< />Ask questions, Expect Answers.< />Be Constructive. < />< />Those of us that did vote for Obama hope that everyone holds him to the highest standard. We think he can meet it.< />< />It takes us all to make this country work.< />< />hugs and love < />Rachel Elaine H< />< />please pardon the length of this post.< />I am not trying to misdirect AD's excellent blog off into the political sphere. But I have felt that there are thinking people here who try to see what really happens instead of just listening to the prepackaged crap they get on the nightly news. Ignore the red/blue crap and pay attention to right and wrong.

  • Oldfart
I've voted in 13 presidential elections now. I cannot remember one where personality played a bigger part than in this recent one. Evidently, that is what most people used as a yardstick when deciding whether or not to vote for him.< />< />During 53 years I carefully studied each candidate and his record before I cast my vote. To claim that I have been a lifelong conservative Republican would be a lie... I started out as a Democrat just like my parents. As time passed and as I grew, I found myself leaning more and more toward the "right" until now I'm a bit to the right of Ghengis Khan.< />< />When the Republican Party was still transporting candidates to the debates in a bus I knew which ones I could not support. John McCain was one of them but just as the media was able to canonize Obama it was equally capable of demonizing any Republicans who might be a serious threat to the messiah. Consequently I was left with an untenable choice: Vote for McCain or just not vote.< />< />Then Palin came on the scene and for the first time in all those years I was given a real choice... a slim choice of course, but it was a choice. According to today's news, the media is still doing everything it can to kill her chances for 2012. They must fear her more than death itself.< />< />AD, from what I read in your post, you want us all to be good losers. I don't know which sports philosopher said it first but it obviously needs to be repeated: 'Show me a good loser and I'll show you a loser.' We lost this election and it's likely to be tough for a few years but I will not go quietly into that good night. If you or any of your readers, in a fit of magnanimity, want to declare that he is "your" president... go ahead. I consider him a domestic enemy and I've sworn on several occasions to protect the Constitution from the likes of him.

If this had been McCain's inauguration there would have been plenty of rock throwing Che-wearing smelly dirtbag hippies disrupting the festivities.< />< />Conservatives don't do that. We respect the Office of the President.

like many others here, i am terrified for our country. and i am praying fervently that my fears are unfounded. < />< />however, i still feel the need to correct commenter matt m. over the last 8 years, i have been infuriated when the msm has disrespectfully referred to the president as "mr bush". whether i like the man or not, his title is "president obama" not mr.

    Thank you, AD.
  • Matt M
I like your attitude, AD. I hope that we can keep things hopeful for a while. Mr. Obama is our president, and has a lot of things to fix, and is responsible for the status of things he cannot fix, at least in the minds of most Americans.< />< />I hope those comments here from those who are not willing to accept the president do not represent too many Americans' attitudes.

without all the wild-eyed accusations and rancor the left threw at Bush for eight years.< />< />You know, like grownups.< />< />I fear you missed that last part before you began your rant.
  • Heckawe
I'll withhold my overall opinion of the man until after I've seen him in action for a year or two, same as I would have if McCain had won. Either way, the man in that office would have been my president, and he would have gotten my support at least until his first all-out assault on our various rights.< />< />Keep your fingers crossed that we're wrong about the guy (in a good way).
  • Lee
Sorry "Bad Yogi", but I don't remember talking about Clinton, Ollie North, or any of that crowd. Don't know what relevance that has to a Chicago Machine made politician. But if you want to whack around straw men be my guest.< />< />I'm judging Mr. Obama by his actions, his public statements, and the company he keeps. Unlike you I refuse to buy into the cult of personality. I will not "rise above it" because you and your fellow cult followers haven't.< />< />Let me know when you're ready to discuss Barack Obama the man, not Barack Obama the Lightworker.
  • Jay G
, I'll give Barack Obama exactly as much leeway as the MSM gave George Bush.< />< />Natural disaster hits? Well, then, the FedGov better have boots on the ground within seconds, otherwise Barack Obama must hate white people.< />< />Price of gas goes up? Barack Obama is enriching his oil company cronies.< />< />Unusually warm summer? Barack Obama's fault for not signing the Kyoto Accords.< />< />You get the idea. Turnabout is fair play.
  • Ross
I have to admit that I'm tired of having to be the grownup, politically speaking. I've had 8 years of "shrub" and cartoons that make President Bush look like either Alfred E. Neuman or a monkey. And I'm getting thoroughly SICK of all the self-congratulation and the back-patting going on - I'm about to stop listening to my favorite radio station because I can't STAND all the gushing that one of the morning DJ's is doing.< />< />No, Bush wasn't perfect - he did some things that I loathe. I still think he was better than Gore or Kerry would have been. And I'll be thrilled no end to look back in '12 and realize that I was wrong and that Obama DIDN'T manage to ruin the country and our Constitution beyond repair... and surprised as hell, too, as that's what I expect to happen.
  • Casey
    Well said!

< />< />That about sums it up for me, thank you.< />< />Quite honestly, I think he will prove too incompetent to be bad. To quote a Steve Earle song horribly out of context, I look forward to "four more years of things not getting worse."< />< />Of course, only time will tell. The cult of personality issue worries me far more than the man himself; I think it says very bad things of our country that so many people have a crush on the President.
  • Old NFO
    Good point AD.

blame him for every goddamned thing that happens during the next four years, as his party has blamed his predecessor.< />< />I will simply point out reality as it happens. He and his party have very little opposition in their way, and so have nothing but opportunity to get it right. I will not revel in their failure to do so as I will not revel in the damage they will do to our country. But I will point out their failures and so give his voters every opportunity to see that, when you don't really know what you're voting for, you shouldn't be surprised at what you get.< />< />In clinical terms, projection is a bitch, and they're gonna get bit by it.

    - not something I encourage. It is nice that the fanatics seem not to have done anything to disrupt the inauguration. That would have helped convince the rest of the world that we are nothing but knuckle dragging mouth breathers. < />< />I know the rest of the world doesn't matter. That's why we had to get so many to ally with us for the two current wars, because these allies< />don't matter.< />< />I always thought it would be much more interesting if President Bush and Chairman Andropov had been in charge at the same time. Spy vs. Spy on a global level, or a couple of guys who understand that lying to the other guy is futile.

Let me get this straight: For the past 8 years I've been hearing non-stop whining, hatred, and outright slander against the President. Now, all of a sudden, I'm supposed to unite with those same people.< />< />No.< />< />Why should I get behind a man who nominates Eric Holder to the Cabinet? Google his name; see what kind of dirt bag he is.< />< />You may want to forget history, start with a clean slate, and join the personality cult. I will evaluate the man on his actions and the company he keeps. So far I am underwhelmed.

A-freakin'-men, AD. He's the publically elected 44th President of the United States, and as such, he's my President.< />< />I am already out of patience with the Conservatives who decided to be just as petulant and bone-headed as the "Not My President" idiots from the moonbat Left we had to suffer for the last eight years.< />< />And why is it that so many people just now start to give a shit about preserving the Bill of Rights? Oh, that's right...nobody tried to take their precious *guns* when GWB was in office. Feh.< />< />Good on you, AD. I may not agree with the guy or his policies, but wishing him ill is wishing ill on the country, and that's inexcusable...especially for professed patriots. Work to make him a one-termer, speak your mind every chance you get, use the democratic process...but for God's sake, stop being petulant little bitches just because your guy didn't win this one.
