Y'all Say Hello To Mule Breath

I’ve got a good friend, a very intelligent and erudite fellow, who is about as far from me on the political spectrum as one can get.

And yet, on all the important things, our views are pretty much identical.

He’s a tie-dyed in the wool hippie.

He’s an avowed atheist, or to use his term for it, a non-theist.

He’s a Godless pinko liberal Democrat* who voted for Obama.

Yet common ground is easier to find than one might think.

He’s actually more libertarian than liberal.

He doesn’t actually wear tie-dye. His wardrobe is more rural west Texas shitkicker than Berkley tofu-eater.

He cooks a mean chili and an even better steak, and he keeps Coors and Shiner Bock on tap at his house.

He’s a shooter, and a biker.

He’s an old-school paramedic.

He’s a huge sci-fi and history fan, and he reads obsessively.

He is, to borrow a phrase from our mutual friend TOTWTYTR, “wicked smaht.”

Above all else, he’s a true Texas gentleman, and a man I’m proud to call friend.

And now he has a blog. Y’all welcome Of Mule Dung and Ash to the blogosphere. Bookmark him. You may not agree with everything he writes, but it’s always worth reading.

*Sorry, Mule Breath. Couldn’t resist the characterization. *grin*

I still cannot get over the cognitive dissonance between “shooter” and “voted for Obama”.Sorry.But if you vouch for him, AD, he’s good people.

Sounds a little like my very good friend, Mr. Bud. We don’t always agree and he’s a long haired hippie, but he’s one of the most stand up guys I know and a honey.Welcome to the blogosphere, Mule Breath.

Holy Mole…How does one live up to that? All I can say is thanks for the vote. Several of your buds have visited since you posted this and I’ve gotten a couple nice emessages. Thanks for the kind words, both here and on mine. For Jay G, all I can say there is nothing cognitively dissonant in my thought process when considering the best available paths for the future of this country. I’m a patriot and strict constitutionalist. One must be synoptic and avoid superficial assessment based only on focused interest. One must also take what passes through the cybersphere with the proverbial grain of salt.I invite you to visit Of Mule Dung and Ash. Follow my logic and see if you can’t find a connection. Debate with me when you disagree. We’ll both benefit.

AD, at the risk of embarrassing our friend, he’s everything you said, except liberal Democrat. I think he’s more libertarian than anything although I am baffled by his vote for Obama. Then again, he might be right and we wrong. He is probably the most gracious person I’ve ever met. At the risk of sounding maudlin, he’s a southern gentleman of a kind we need more of in the north, south, east, and west. And yes, his cooking is a treat that I look forward to every time we meet.

“except liberal Democrat”I am liberal but not necessarily Democrat. “I think he’s more libertarian than anything”Yeah, that too“I am baffled by his vote for Obama”I did it to piss you off.“he might be right and we wrong”I am, you are…“At the risk of sounding maudlin”He died back in ’03. Damn fine cartoonist philosopher.http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/ARTmauldin.htm“he’s a southern gentleman”You have me confused with Col. Sanders…“his cooking is a treat”First thing you’ve said in about 20 years with which I agree… at the risk of sounding conceited.

Jay G,And hence you leave at least 100 million people out there, feeling like you don’t want them around until somoene speaks for them. There aren’t 100 million people waiting for an Ambo Driver to speak for them. Will you please – please – get over your political prejudice and treat people as people, not as a party. We’re good people, we gunnies who voted for Obama. We’re intelligent, erudite, contrary, nonconformist and befuddling. But when you who should be our friend – people who stand by the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, and who’ll scream-charge a teletubby with bayonet fitted – consider any Obama voter an automatic enemy unless vetted…We all lose. And if we don’t hang together around our Constitution, and our Bill of Rights, then we shall assuredly hang seperately.

Mark,Just where did you get “enemy” from my comment?I stand by my comment. I do not understand how anyone who supports the Second Amendment could have voted for Obama. The man’s short political career is littered with his disdain for the right of the people to keep and bear arms.I’ve detailed my dislike for the man’s politics enough in my own corner of cyberspace, I don’t wish to rehash the battle (which is over, anyways, and Obama won, so…), least of all in someone else’s comments.

It’s not conceited if it’s undeniably true. Why do you think I sweated so much in choosing a restaurant when you visited my area?

My contribution to all this streaming erudition and good will? It’s BerkEley. That’s BerkEley. You rarely make mistakes… and who cares, really, about BerkEley? Except for the stray *alum* {grin} who would still be there were it not for the fact that California is going to burn, shake, and then fall into the ocean… Warren Zevon was right.Your friend sounds like a worthwhile read — thanks for the reference!

Got here from his site. You’re linked – anybody who thinks the SBV were incorrect of their appraisal of Kerry’s character won’t be read, much less linked. I don’t care if JMB gave him a 1911 personally.Life is too short to read utter dreck. My opinion, only. Of course to some folks, mein blog is dreck.

Always sad to find someone so damn certain of a position they refuse to be confused by facts. I don’t give a rat’s patoot about Kerry and didn’t vote for him in 2004, but I do care about allegations that have smeared a damn awful lot of valiant men – all in the name of winning an election. Old Man needs to read something not filled with partisan bile.Old Man sez: The very high percentage of the men in his squadron who were members of the SBV. But then again, some folks have a negative effect on those who surround them through no fault of their own.Mule Breath sez: There were 13 out of a 3,500 member division signing as SBVT, and only four actually served with Kerry. One of the four was his commander, who later recanted and called his participation with the SBVT “a mistake”. Two of those remaining were embarrassed when it came to light that one of them recommended the other for a Bronze Star for the same firefight that they claimed there had been no fire.Old Man sez: I was personally offended as a US Army RVN veteran by John’s use of a 19th century reg to escape after 4 months due to picayune wounds. Hell, I served 23 months over in what we called “Rocket Alley” and in no way consider myself any more than one of the boys in the band.Mule Breath sez: Then you should be offended at the Navy, not Kerry. In 1969 Navy regulations specified that any soldier wounded three times was automatically reassigned out of the combat arena.Old Man sez: I have yet to see any evidence to the contrary of the SBV claims. Surely there is some documentary or even anecdotal evidence refuting the charges.Mule Breath sez: Yep, sure is. For anyone interested in the truth, not the fiction that Old Man believes, follow the link below. This will take you to the Findlaw.com page listing military records for both 2004 Presidential candidates. These documents offer “evidence to the contrary of the SBV claims.”http://news.findlaw.com/legalnews/lit/election2004/docs.htmlIn addition, if you will watch my blog [ http://muledungandash.blogspot.com/ ] over the next few days, I plan to publish a letter written by four of Kerry’s squad who were actually with him in the debated firefight, and signed by in agreement by five others. The thing is long, so I plan to publish it over at least a few days. Old Man, you’re welcome too… if you’re interested in truth. Mule Breath
