Leaving On A Jet Plane…

But I do know when I’ll be back again.

That’ll be late Saturday evening. Till then, I’ll be in Sioux City, Iowa, speaking at their EMS conference.

I just noticed on the program that one of the speakers will be James Hyatt, Executive Vice President and C.O.O. of Virginia Tech University.

The title of his presentation? Campus Security and Emergency Preparedness.

The program doesn’t say whether it’s supposed to be informative or humorous, but in any case, it oughta be a short lecture.

Some of the other posters seem upset at your comment. All I’d advise is for you to think of how to show him up as a total idiot with one polite question, if you think it is appropriate. If I were him, I’d still be too ashamed to show my face.

I love you and your writing, but I’ve gotta say that’s pretty harsh. Notice I didn’t say inappropriate or nonsensical, just…harsh.

So, I can blame you if we get bad weather in Iowa?

<>He’s probably going to explain that their “No Guns” policy only resulted in 33 deaths as opposed to a “wild west” shootout that couls have resulted in hundreds of killed or wounded. JimB<>The sad part is, you really believe that. Remember: when seconds count, the police are only minutes away!

I started to respond, then found that I was up to 300 words with no end in sight, so this is pared down quite a bit. I’d be intrigued to hear what he has to say, too. I’d like to hear his “reasoning” for disarming students and faculty (and not this nonsense about “feeling safe”). I’d like him to explain how a “no guns” sign is somehow going to keep us safe.btw, I’m a VT student (I started last July, after the Cho massacre). With a CHP. In a shooting situation, I’d rather take my chances with being mistaken for a bad guy than to cower and beg for mercy.-Sailor45 on various boards

I was born and raised in Sioux City. Left at age 17, and haven’t been back. What were your impressions of the place?

You know, this is really sad. The same man that is directly responsible for LACK of security and therefore deaths of the students, gets to profit by exploiting this tragedy and pretends to be AN EXPERT (of all things) on campus security. Kind of like if I caused a horrible car crash becuause of my lack of driving skills, and later got a sweet gig making speaches on driving safety…. Are the people who screw up somehow experts now?….

I agree with what Chris and others have said– that this man was complicit in the deaths of those students at VT. I find humor is an appropriate way of dealing with this tragedy, and I resent other people transferring their righteous indignation over this abomination from the responsible parties and onto innocents like yourself who dared to make pithy observations. Rock on, AD.

I second LaP. Maggie, I have a daughter at a major University in North Texas. I thank the Good Lord every dahm day that she attends school in TX and that she has a handgun! You didn’t say if your child was physically injured that terrible day at VT or not. If so, I am sorry for your child’s pain and suffering. If your child was physically unharmed, but personally witnessed the carnage, I’m sure they bear emotional scars. The best way you can protect your child in the future is to ARM him/her so they don’t have to fear for their life ever again. Just some advice, Mother to Mother. I know I’m secure in the knowledge that if a crazed or evil shooter enters MY child’s classroom, she has the means and mindset to DEFEND not only herself, but those around her. I’d rather pay her legal fees that her funeral expenses.
