Apropos of Nothing Whatever…

From comments in a recent post:

“There’s a difference between spanking and beating a child with a stick.”

Duhr.

“If you have to beat your children (or your dogs) with a stick to control them, then you aren’t parenting and you shouldn’t have a dog.”

Go back and read the post. Heck, go back and read the whole blog. Then, consider the following:

hy·per·bo·le [hahy-pur-buh-lee] –noun Rhetoric.

1. obvious and intentional exaggeration.
2. an extravagant statement or figure of speech not intended to be taken literally, as “to wait an eternity.”

met·a·phor [met-uh-fawr, -fer] – noun
1. a figure of speech in which a term or phrase is applied to something to which it is not literally applicable in order to suggest a resemblance, as in “A mighty fortress is our God.”
2. something used, or regarded as being used, to represent something else; emblem; symbol.

That is all.

Whether the object used to encourage discipline is a hickory switch or a oak paddle (and I’ve been hit with both) the point is to discourage undesirable behavior, and I have to say it is really effective. I am living proof that if administered correctly corporal punishment (or as I call them jokingly beatings) ARE effective and you know what? I’m planning one spanking my children when / if they are evil little hellions like I was from time to time. To say that hitting your child is always wrong is in of its self wrong. Its all in the application, sort of like firearms it can be used correctly or drastically incorrectly.

Sadly, the problem with defining Hyperbole and Metaphor is that not only do some people not understand the meaning of those two words (ja, I know, hence the definition) but said persons rarely get the difference between words “literal” and “figurative”, used in said definitions. ie. “I was so mad I literally exploded”, mentioned one of my co-workers recently. Me: “wow, you survived”. *sigh*
